Coop’s participation in what was bound to end up a picture about Bean. That was Cooper’s grievance on the project, and it was only accentuated when he saw how slowly and with what chewy delight Walter Brennan planned to eat his part. Not that Cooper’s distress was directed at Brennan. The two actors were pals already and they bonded further over their shared dislike of Goldwyn. Brennan won the supporting actor Oscar as Bean. He commanded the picture, but that did not clash with the magical way in which the nearly meditative Cooper eventually killed the weasel chatterbox. The picture was a hit, and people came away from it relishing Cooper all the more.

His next assignment was as a Texas Ranger who pursues a target north of the border so that he meets up with the North West Mounted Police. It’s a Cecil B. DeMille picture in which too much of the great outdoors is rebuilt on awkward sets where every footfall signals the wooden floor. And then comes Meet John Doe, one of the unyielding problem pictures of American film history. It was not nominated for Best Picture, or for Frank Capra’s direction. It got a screenwriting nod, but Gary Cooper was passed over for acting. He had to be, I suppose, in that the same year he collected his inevitable Oscar for Sergeant York. We are coming to that bizarre film, so hard to stomach now, but as we do so, bear in mind that the alarming but arresting untidiness of Meet John Doe rests nearly entirely on the haggard, desperate look of Gary Cooper.
